So I was in a Woody Allen mood last night and I remembered watching a rather hilarious scene from this movie in my First Year Seminar my first semester of college with Professor Grady. I had always wanted to see the rest of the film since I’m such a Woody Allen fan – and it was indeed VERY Woody Allen – just completely unhinged and uncensored.
The scene I had previously enjoyed as pictured above was the last and funniest part of the entire film. The other vignettes were dripping with the typical Woody Allen shtick, but got to a point of sheer ridiculousness. I was in the mood for this type of humor, but this is in his earlier years, when I think he’s still trying to find what works and what doesn’t. However, devil’s advocate, there are some Woody Allen fans out there that would find this stuff to be pure genius comedy, and that’s fantastic.
I’d like to think I have a pretty wide spectrum of films that I enjoy, but even some of these stories were too outlandish for me, (the giant evil boob that is attacking the countryside, Gene Wilder having an affair with a sheep, etc.) but alas, that’s what you should expect. Or better yet, have no expectations, because every Woodymovie is different.
I’m going to go ahead and give this one three stars, and maybe go watch Hannah and Her Sisters for some good cleansing.
